Not too much to say about Philip Humber as he hasn’t pitched much over his short career. He only has a total of 40 innings over the previous three seasons, and has bounced around between the Mets, Twins, Royals, A’s & the White Sox in the past four years.
Although he was picked up in the offseason as a relief pitcher, Humber got a chance to be the #5 starter since Peavy is injured. Peavy is not scheduled to come back until early May, so Humber may actually get another start after tonight’s game. Right now, Humber is 1-2 with a 4.00 ERA. Although his first start was good against the Rays, he pitched against them again last week and allowed 6 hits in 5 innings with 4 runs. Humber has never pitched against the Yankees.
Humber throws a fastball that sits around 90-91 mph and doesn’t have many strikeouts (11K’s in past 3 starts). He learned to throw a cutter this year, so I would imagine he would use it often tonight. The Cutter has been helping his groundball rate which is 45%. Humber can be really hit or miss tonight. The Yankees seem to have trouble with new pitchers, but at the same time, the Yankees are red hot right now at the plate. Even if Humber’s stuff is good, the Yankees will make him throw as many pitches as possible so they can exploit the White Sox bullpen early in this series.
