I don’t think it’s out of the question to see Arod come back for next weekend’s series against the Twins. Arod has been rehabbing down in Tampa for a few weeks now, but it wasn’t until this weekend that he got some game time with the Class-A Tampa Yankees.
Friday night Arod was the DH and went 2 for 3, with a long home run and a double. These two extra base hits will temporarily dispel any concerns over his power numbers following his knee injury. Arod was DH again Saturday in another game for the Tampa Yanks & went 0-3 with a walk. He is scheduled to play in a simulated game Sunday afternoon in the Yankees complex. Although he hasn’t played third base in the two rehab games, he has been doing defensive drills and will likely have a couple starts at third before rejoining the Yankees.
Assuming he continues to rehab successfully, there is a chance he will join the team again as soon as next weekend in Minnesota. I have a feeling he will start a few games at DH instead of Posada, while Chavez or Nunez play third. Since Posada is a bench player and Chavez is a gold glove third basemen, Girardi has some freedom for how much he uses Arod especially against the ailing Twins.
UPDATE: Arod had a succesful simulated game today and did some defensive work as well. It's likely that he will join the Scranton Yankees for a couple games starting Tuesday. The Yankees want Arod to play two full games with Scranton before rejoining the Yanks, so there is a strong chance he will be in Minnesota next weekend.
